Lebanon: AMA distributes hygiene kits as cholera spreads

As cholera spreads around Lebanon at an alarming rate, those in refugee camps are some of the worst affected. AMA has been on the ground distributing essentials, including clean water, hygiene kits and dignity kits for those in need.
Over 2,000 suspected cholera cases have been detected in the country as of this month, with 18 deaths recorded. According to the World Health Organisation, 25 percent of the cases are affecting children under the age of five.
The outbreak comes amidst a worsening economic situation in the country, as well as hospitals overwhelmed by patients. The coronavirus pandemic has also continued to ravage through many parts of the country.
The outbreak of cholera in the country marks the first in around three decades.
In an effort to curb the spread and assist those most in need, AMA is currently on the ground in the Arsaal region of Lebanon distributing clean water.
Emergency packages were also handed out to beneficiaries, which include a number of cleaning products for the home, waste disposal bags, disinfectants and soaps.
To ensure the safety and sanitation for young girls and women, AMA also distributed ‘dignity kits’, which include sanitary products, soaps, wipes, a towel, torch amongst other hygiene products.
Along with the distribution of the emergency packages, AMA delivered educational sessions at the Aman School of Excellence to students and parents about how to stay safe and maintain good sanitation practices.
The sessions were well received and were fundamental in raising awareness on the dangers of poor sanitation.
